  • Viva La Vida

Oops. Forgot to blog in my blog last night. Let's have a song of the morning to catch up.

Despite my visceral loathing of 2005's shit sandwich X & Y, I finally gave in to the almost year-long hype this morning and listened to Coldplay's Viva La Vida. I have to say, I'm pleasantly surprised. Martin & Co. melted the icy Coldplay-shaped walls around my heart in minutes, and all that remained was that old familiar tepid pool we all soaked in the first time we listened to Parachutes. Apparently, the secret to Coldplay coming out of their funk was to avoid making another Coldplay album. Instead they mimicked the best parts of U2's recent albums and had Brian Eno work his magic on it until it all sounded like an original idea. This isn't a bad thing. I'm happy for the boys. They finally broke free of their "Clocks" routine, and at least on this album, it's serving them well. I'm excited to hear what they'll do next.

Song of the morning: A track from Viva La Vida I particularly enjoyed called "Cemeteries of London," which really does sound like a cross between U2, Deliriou5?, and Coldplay. I find it odd that this appeals to me, which is part of the album's charm.
